Kids Are People Too!!

  People move for all sorts of reasons: job changes, family size, neighborhood changes, divorce, financial concerns or  just for adventure! And even though they may have had some input into the process..children do not make the final decision! Consequently,  for your children,  Moving can be very Traumatic!

  The most important step you can take, with children of all ages, is to tell them what is going to happen...as soon as possible. Involve your children in the process. Assign some tasks related to the move allow them to be invested in it. Help them to own it!

  Younger children adjust more easily after all Mom and Dad are still the center of their universe! Any insecuritys or stresses can usually be salved by consistant reassurance. Teens on the other hand ....have a difficult time with moving. Mom and Dadare definitely NOT the center of their universe! Their friends are. They often feel their world has come to an end!

  There are many publications about moving with kids. A popular one is Moving With Kids:25 Ways to Ease Your Family's Transition to a New Home by Lori Collins Burgan. Two web sites that may prove helpful are Kids Health and Movers Directory. Both have good information about moving with children.

                                                             TIPS FOR YOUTH

  •       Explain where you are moving to and why
  •      Tell them what will be "fun" about it (accent the positives!)
  •      If possible let them choose their own room
  •      Make a visit to their new school before school starts
  •      If you are able to arrange the move for Summer Vacation time...check with the local Parks and Recreation Department. They often offer special outings or social get-togethers for different age groups. A great way for your child to met their peers before school begins!
  •       Assign them a task to help with the move: Have them be responsible for taking care of the pets and packing the pet items. Have them write on or put a star on the boxes holding their belongings so they can find them right away!

  •     Have them research their new community, schools and popular attractions on the Internet.
  •     Let them decorate their own room! (even if you hate it...just try to guide!)

Special Needs Kids~Have Special Needs

Special Needs - Moving With Kids and PIC

   Mike

  Relocating means Change. Changing Schools, Changing Doctors, Locating New Service Providers. This can be overwhelming when combined with the actual physical elements of moving!

  It is difficult enough for children and parents when there are no physical or emotional obstacles. But if you have a child who does now or may potentially need Special Services, and you will  be in an area you are totally unfamiliar with....Where do you start.

  Here is some information that should put you on the right track!!

  Here in New Hampshire we have a wonderful Organization known as PIC (Parent Information Center)brochure

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  PIC is a Statewide Organizationproviding information, support and also educational programs for parents/family members, educators and the community redarding the Special Education Process. PIC's Mission Statement is: "To guide and encourage families in supporting the unique learning potential of their children"
  PIC is a place to start.... In addition to providng support services they help Familys find  resources.
  Some of the programs under the "PIC Umbrella" are:
  1. PIRC - This program supports children from birth. It is a US Department of Education -funded program supporting Reading/Literacy, School Readiness, Assessments and workshops for Parents and Educators, many of which are Free.
  2. PTI- Parent Training and Information. This program holds workshops on The Special Education Process, Section 504 and IDEA, IEP clinics, Behavior Interventions and more...again most are Free
  3. SSECT- Supporting successful Early Childhood Transitions
  Many other services are provided in other areas such as Autism, Hearing, Home Schooling and Advocacy to name a few.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  So don't be discouraged by what may seem to be a Mission Impossible. There are many Organizations in place that can smooth the way. PIC is one of them.

Pets Are People Too

Fido's Got Feelings Too!

ImageChef.com - Custom comment codes for MySpace, Hi5, Friendster and more

  Moving is an Exciting yet Stressful process! All the Planning and Organization, Packing, Labeling and Storing your worldly goods can keep you pre-occupied for months before the big day!

  But don't forget Fido and Fluffy! Moving can be especially Traumatic  for our furry family members.....

  I don't know how it is at your house? But, at mine the minute the maroon travel bags are set on the bed...They Know! We are followed from room to room and we get the guilt inducing "how can you leave us" looks. And that's just for an overnight!

  For your pets....Moving is "gone for the weekend trauma" times 1000.

  Here are some tips for easing that process (for all of you)

                                     *8 MOVING TIPS FOR PETS

  •   Start with your Vet: Discuss how well your pet travels. Your Vet may recommend a mild sedative or nausea preventative.Research the State rules of where you are re-locating. Vaccinations may be required.
  •   Get New ID Tags with your new address: should you and your pet become separated. Have a current photo on hand!
  •   Plan Ahead for Air Travel: Each Airlines has specific rules and regulations you must follow!
  •   Maintain a Normal Routine: Start you pacing weeks in advance to help keep the daily routine as normal as possible. Reduce the Stress!
  •   Train Your Pet to a Carrier: Making your pet comfortable with a carrier can enable you to keep him/her confined safely during the actual moving day reducing the danger of injury or loss. It is also useful as a restraint on a car trip.
  •   Restrain your Pet in Your Car: Use a harness or animal seat belt or carrier. Keep them away from open windows and plan frequent stops for water and "relief" breaks
  •   Find Pet Friendly Lodging: Check in advance and plan your trip around these pet friendly facilities.
  •   Prepare Your New Home: Pack your pets "favorites"...toys, bedding, dishes and treats! Have them unpacked first and put them along with your pet in a confined space until a noticeable comfort level has been reached!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  In general, moving with pets can be accomplished smoothly and with a minimum of trauma...if Planned!
  Dogs are attached to us more that their "space" and adjust rather quickly and calmly as long as their humans ars in sight. ImageChef.com - Custom comment codes for MySpace, Hi5, Friendster and more Cats can be more of a problem. They on the other hand are attached to their home it is their world especially if they are  usually confined to being inside. Our feline friends must be handled with care.
  Here are some links to some great information on Pet Friendly Travel and special Cat Tips.
  Most of all be Sensitive and Conscious of how this process may be affecting your Pets. Remember.... ImageChef.com - Custom comment codes for MySpace, Hi5, Friendster and more
 TIPS FOR MOVERS
  I have been noticing those advertisements for Pod Moving. To the best of my knowledge it is relatively new to the New Hampshire area but I predict it will take us by storm!
  A recent client of mine moved here from Colorado. On closing day he had no truck or evidence of furniture and I asked him when his belongings were coming. He said they were already here , in storage, in a Pod!
  With the Pod moving system they bring a pod to your house or apartment and you fill it at your leisure. From what I understand you rent the Pod for one price no matter how long you have it! After the Pod is packed...they come pick it up. You can have it delivered to where you are moving or kept in their facility should your place not be ready. Then not only is it delivered to your door...you unpack at your leisure and then call to have it removed.
 Now that alone is fantastic for the hundreds of people moving to a New Construction, if it's not finished....no problem, put your stuff in a Pod. It also works for Closing Dates that can't be co-ordinated or for people Staging A Home, needing to remove items...they only have to move them once!
~~ In my book this is one giant stress reliever!~~
 I asked my Client how he liked it. He said the staff from the office people to the drivers...were very friendly and accommodating. He said it was a little more expensive....but definitely worth it!
 Sounds good to me! Guess what? The Pods Are Coming!pod container (There's one in Nashua)
